The Award was incorporated in 2009 to recognise the past contributions of Bernie Hughes to the Past Players and Officials Movement.

To be eligible for the Award people being nominated would need to be recognised for their selfless contribution or activities that have been of benefit to the Past Players and Officials movement and the WAFL Combined Past Players and Officials Association in general during the season.

The Award is for achievements and contributions for a current season and does not include achievements or general activities from previous years. Achievements and activites over many years of service is recognised by the individual Associations.

ROD HAZELL - Peel Thunder

The Bernie Hughes Award receipient for 2022 was Rod Hazell from the Peel Thunder Football Club Past Players and Officials Association.

The Award was present to Ray by Lynnete and Taylor Hughes, representing the Hughes Family. The Award was presented at the Annual Bernie Hughes Award and Xmas Function function held at the Peel Thunder Football Club Function Centre on Sunday 4th September 2022.

The Award was presented to Agnes Preedy and Robert Dickerson by the WAFL Combined Association Patron Dennis Cometti on behalf of the Hughes Family. The Awards were presented at the Annual Xmas and Bernie Hughes Lunch at the Leederville Sports Club on Sunday 3rd December 2017 in front of 90 guests representing the Past Players and Officials movement.

The Award was presented to both John Rowe and Mike Hawthorne by Members of the Hughes family. The Awards were presented at the Annual Xmas and Bernie Hughes Lunch at the Swan Yacht Club on Sunday 6th December 2015.

The Award was presented to John by Lois Hughes, the wife of the late Bernie Hughes. The Award was presented at the Annual Xmas and Bernie Hughes Lunch at the Swan Yacht Club on Sunday 1st December 2013.

The Combined Association's Patron Dennis Cometti was also in attendance to meet and greet the 96 guests who attended the lunch.
