Unsung WAFL Hero
It was reported in 2010 that an agreement had been secured with the national insurer AAMI and the West Australian Football League for two years worth $500,000.
WAFL Operations Manager Clint Roberts stated that "it was the largest individual sponsorship deal by the league in at least the past two decades".
Both AAMI and the WAFL are to be congratulated on negotiating and finalising this deal. It will be of immeasurable benefit to Australian Rules Football in WA.
While it may be the largest contractual deal in the past two decades, it is certainly not the largest financial input in this time. This record is held by the WAFL Past Players and Officials Association that has been contributing since 1959.
The overall contribution runs into millions of dollars in direct financial donations to each of the clubs and to junior football, both regional and metropolitan. If the number of unpaid hours contributed is taken into calculation this figure could triple.
This movement, which does not seek publicity for its efforts, is really the unsung hero of Australian Rules in WA.
